The new store opening in a corner of Omotesando Hills will have a unique feature, the only one of its kind among all Grand Seiko boutiques worldwide. Upon entering the entrance and proceeding to the main space, you will find yourself in an immersive environment that embodies the brand's message, "Alive in Time." Images and music projected onto the store's LED walls will transport customers into the world of the "Evolution 9 Collection," a flagship collection that presents a new frontier for Grand Seiko.
Furthermore, for the first time in a Grand Seiko boutique, there is a corner where you can directly see and touch models, primarily from the Evolution 9 collection, allowing you to more easily experience the craftsmanship and precision that Grand Seiko has continuously refined.
The boutique's display windows will showcase works by artists with a strong affinity for Grand Seiko's craftsmanship, expressing the allure of Grand Seiko. These works, interpreting Grand Seiko from the artists' unique perspectives, will create a new point of contact between Grand Seiko and visitors to Omotesando, a hub of cultural activity.
Our first featured artist is Hirofumi Nakamura, the fourth-generation owner of Nakamura Dolls, a Hakata doll workshop with over 100 years of history. Nakamura reinterprets the traditional Japanese craft of Hakata dolls in a modern way, sketching the lion emblem that symbolizes Grand Seiko, and then creating a three-dimensional representation of it using Hakata doll techniques, resulting in the work "The Lion of Time."
The Thoughts That Hirofumi Nakamura Put Into His Work
I believe that the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, which has been passed down through generations in Japan, of deeply understanding natural materials and bringing out their full potential by working with them, shares common ground with the manufacturing process of Grand Seiko watches. In this piece, I incorporated the essence of the lion, which is uniquely Japanese, and used it in the form of the work. Although it is different from the original color of a lion, I envisioned what colors Grand Seiko would take if it were to take the form of a living creature and colored it accordingly. I aimed to express the sense of pride and encouragement one feels when wearing a Grand Seiko watch.
