The 9F quartz movement uses a battery as its power source to make a quartz oscillator vibrate 32,768 times per second, thus keeping time. Because quartz watches have less torque than mechanical watches, they cannot move thick, heavy hands, so generally thin hands are used.

However, Grand Seiko's 9F quartz movement employs an original twin-pulse control motor technology, which allows it to use thick, imposing hands.
